A time to reflect …
Donald Trump doesn’t really go for wordplay.
Nicknames, sure. He’s a master of the simple, childish insult that cuts right to the hearts of eternal backbenchers and fading statesmen. (Think “Little Marco” or “Sleepy Joe.”) You can’t deny he’s got a knack for odd word choices that burrow into the brain (“many such cases,” “fake news”). Still, he rarely reaches for an outright pun.
That’s a real shame. Workers are currently scrambling to kill off an algal bloom in front of the Lincoln Memorial, pouring hydrogen peroxide into the green water that Trump tried to make blue via a costly renovation. Staring down yet another quick and expensive patch job for a problem he’s created, a different president might look back on all of his recent own-goals and faceplants and find it a little funny that this latest foul-up happened at a literal reflecting pool.
Luckily, we can do the remembering for him. Trump still holds true to Steve Bannon’s flood-the-zone philosophy, pushing his blunders out of the papers with an endless torrent of news, but our archive is searchable. Trump painted himself as a compassionate leader in 2018 as he signed an executive order halting family separations at the border, saying he “didn’t like the feeling” of tearing families apart. He failed to mention that his own zero-tolerance policy was causing the crisis in the first place.
Trump rushed in to save Special Olympics funding and America’s cattle herd after funding cuts he championed threatened both. Remember when Trump celebrated his historic deal to reduce tariffs imposed on China (in a scheme he created)?
If your memory’s not so good, or you’d rather not think about how we’ve been living with Trumpism for a decade, just look to this weekend. Trump crowed over the pending ceasefire deal with Iran and the supposed reduction in gas prices it foretold, neglecting to mention that he started the war for seemingly no good reason.
If anything, taking a moment to lay out the fixes for Trump, to problems created by Trump, helps put his latest fiasco in perspective. We’d count ourselves lucky if most of Trump’s screwups could be remedied with a bit of bleach.
What do you think? Where does the reflecting pool rank among Trump’s mistakes? Sound off in the comments.
