Epstein plays Banquo in Trump’s Scottish stay
The president found out over the weekend that five time zones away is not far enough to escape the ghost of Jeffrey Epstein.
Earlier this month, the Trump administration went back on promises to release collected information on the late sex trafficker. Trump has spent the weeks since attempting to muddle the timeline of Epstein’s arrest and death, begging his followers not to shake the criminal’s gory locks at him.
Epstein was taken into custody and died in jail during Trump’s first term, and the case files collected against Epstein are of a similar vintage, but Trump has painted the entire scandal as a Democrat-led hoax. The problem for Trump? No one seems to buy it.
White House officials had hoped that Trump’s trek to Scotland would cool the heads of revolting MAGA followers. Instead, Trump found that UK protestors had been alerted that something wicked was coming their way. The president’s arrival in Scotland was met by protestors, many of whom carried signs insinuating that Trump had ties to Epstein.
On the tarmac, reporters asked about the Department of Justice’s recent questioning of Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Trump, sounding furious, said the talks signified a whole lot of nothing.
“You’re making a very big thing over something that’s not a big thing,” he said.
Even as Trump successfully negotiated a trade deal with the European Union, reporters found time to ask the president about potential connections to the disgraced financier. During a Q&A session on Sunday, a reporter began to ask if the trade talks were accelerated in an attempt to push Epstein from the headlines.
“Oh, you gotta be kidding with that,” Trump cut in. “No, had nothing to do with it. Only you would think that. That had nothing to do with it.”
While he did take one more question, Trump’s sour mood was evident. Flustered by the specter haunting his European trip, the president called the presser to a close.
What do you think? Will the curiosity about Epstein fade with time, or will Trump have to answer similar questions tomorrow (and tomorrow, and tomorrow)? Sound off in the comments.
