The news, in brief …

  • Sen. Padilla dragged from Noem news conference and handcuffed

The California senator was forcibly removed from the Department of Homeland Security head’s press conference after he attempted to ask her questions about the Trump admin’s handling of Los Angeles protests. "If that’s what they do to a United States Senator with a question, imagine what they can do to any American that dares to speak up," he said.

  • Carbajal demands Hegseth's resignation over dodged questions

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spent a long day on Capitol Hill dodging nearly every question asked of him. After Hegseth gave a non-answer to Rep. Salud Carbajal, the California Democrat demanded he step down. “You’re an embarrassment to this country. You’re unfit to lead,” he said. “You should just get the hell out and let somebody competently lead this department.”

  • Trump admits deportations are hurting farmers, hotel owners

The president made the rare move of accepting the blame for something he did on Thursday, writing on Truth Social that his deportation policy is harming the agriculture and hospitality industries. “Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,” Trump wrote.

  • Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s attorneys seek sanctions against Trump administration

Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been returned to the country after being wrongully deported to El Salvador. The Maryland man’s attorneys feel that the Trump administration should face sanctions for blatantly ignoring court orders in his case. “The lengths the Government has gone to resist discovery relating to these core questions raises a strong inference that the Government is trying to hide its conduct from the scrutiny of this Court, the Plaintiffs, and the public,” his attorneys wrote. “What the Government improperly seeks to hide must be exposed for all to see.”

  • CBO finds lowest-income families will take big hit under GOP's "beautiful" bill

The Congressional Budget Office found that the Trump-backed spending bill working its way through Congress is exactly what it looks like: a massive transfer of wealth to the richest people in the country at the expense of the poor.

Fear of all-out war spreads after Israel attacks Iran

After days of escalating tensions, Israel has launched an attack on Iran.

Israeli government officials called the move a "preemptive strike" in an emergency message to citizens. While declaring a state of emergency throughout the entire country, Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that retaliatory strikes were expected.

"Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future," a message from Katz read.

The Associated Press shared that explosions were reported in Tehran. The outlet added that the explosions had been acknowledged by state television in Iran. An unnamed Israeli official who spoke to the AP said that the wave of attacks targeted nuclear sites and military outposts.

It is not the first missile exchange between the two countries since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Prompted by incursions into Lebanon, Iran launched air attacks on Israel late last year. Israel, in turn, attacked key parts of Iran's air defense system.

In recent days, President Donald Trump had hoped that cooler heads would prevail. The U.S. and Iran are in the middle of talks around a potential nuclear deal, and Trump administration insiders told Axios that the president has no desire to follow Israel into a wider war in the region. Trump had reportedly urged Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu not to carry out such a strike.

Well, what now? Is this the latest round of tit-for-tat between the two nations? Will this strike snowball into a wider war in the region? Sound off in the comments.
